On Wednesday December 6, 2017 at 12:11 p.m. Kaufman Police were dispatched to the 300 block of Kings Fort Parkway (Walmart) in reference to a Theft.
An adult male had been detained for stealing a food item and drink. A Kaufman Police Department Sergeant arrived and met with the individual and learned that the man
had stolen the items because he was hungry and had not eaten in two days.
The Sergeant, having compassion for the subject, gave him some money from his own pocket so that the man could buy him some food and then issued the man a warning citation and released him.
The business advised the Sergeant that they wanted to press Theft charges against the man for taking the items. The Sergeant did not feel that this was the appropriate thing to do.
When a victim of crime, in this instance the business, states that they want to pursue charges against someone for the criminal act of which they are a victim, the department is obligated to do so.
While discussing this issue, after the fact and at the police department, an incident took place that required an internal investigation. It is Kaufman Police Department policy that when an officer is relieved of duty, his weapon and credentials are collected until the investigation is completed.
The department applauds our Sergeant for the compassion and kindness that he showed to this individual and the investigation that is in progress has nothing to do with that decision by our officer.
We appreciate the support from our community and we hope that the example of kindness, shown by our officer inspires others to do the same.
This is an internal personnel matter and no further comments will be made until the completion of the investigation.
