On Friday, May 31st, the Forney Lady Rabbit Softball Team’s 2019 season came to an end courtesy of a wild 7-6 extra inning loss to Angleton High School in the State Semi Finals.
With the victory, Angleton improves to 38-2 overall on the season. Forney sees their outstanding 2019 season end at 36-4.
Forney was trying to pull off the rare feat of repeating as state champions in softball. However, we came up a bit short in our quest. But, hold your heads high ladies. You competed extremely hard and made Forney so proud with your extraordinary efforts indeed.
It should be noted that these two schools have great softball programs. Their wills to win and their refuse to go down easy attitudes are second to none.
In the top of the 2nd inning of this game, Forney jumped ahead 1-0 on a RBI sacrifice fly to right by Savannah Hughes. This scoring opportunity for Forney was set up by a double to right by Savanna Desrochers and an Angleton error.
But, then Angleton, the #1 ranked team in the Class 5A Softball State Rankings, answered back by scoring 2 runs in the second inning and 2 in the third to build a 4-1 lead. In the 2nd frame, the runs for Angleton came home via a Forney error and a RBI single to right respectively. Then, in in the 3rd frame, the runs for Angleton came home via a 2 RBI single to center.
The score would stay at 4-1 until the top of the 6th inning. That is when Forney scored three runs to tie the game at 4-all. In the 6th inning, Forney made it 4-2 when Calleigh Cross came all the way around to score after a throwing error by the Angleton pitcher on a bunt attempt. Then, later in the 6th inning, Forney got two more runners on base via hit by pitches. After this sequence, Savannah Hughes came up and smacked a shot to center field. Angleton’s center fielder almost caught the ball, but it deflected off her glove which allowed Forney’s base runners to score. So now, this game was tied at 4-all.
In the bottom of the 7th, Angleton threatened to win the game. But Forney got some big outs to keep the game going. First, wit has runner on third and one out, Forney’s Calleigh Cross fielded a ground ball and threw a bullet to home plate to get the 2nd out. Also, props to Kyler Sanders for making a great sweeping tag on the play. Then, later in the frame, Angleton loaded the bases. But then Savanna DesRochers induced an inning ending ground out to first base.
Then in the top of the 8th, after a single to center by Hannah Holdbrook, Forney’s Trinity Cannon stepped to the plate and she proceeded to crush a 2-run homer to left which gave the Lady Rabbits their first lead of the game at 6-4. Now, the Lady Rabbits were just three out away from victory.
But, Angleton would fight back In the bottom of the 8th, they got a one out single. Then, the next batter smacked a shot into the left field corner. During this sequence, both Angleton runners would score to tie the game again at 6-all.
This game would not be decided until the bottom of the 11th. After an infield single and a stolen base, Angleton had a runner in scoring position with two outs. Then, their star pitcher and best hitter, Aallyah Garcia blasted a shot off of the center field wall to plate the winning run for Angleton. Final Score: Angleton 7 Forney High School 6 in 11 innings.
Well, we did not realize the dream of back to back state titles in softball. But it has still been an outstanding and memorable 2019 season for the Lady Rabbits. We say goodbye to the graduating seniors. Thanks for the memories especially the 2018 State Softball Title.
Also, to the seniors, best wishes in your future endeavors. God Bless. But, now as we look ahead to the 2020 season, Forney will return a lot of talented players. So, look for the Lady Rabbits to make a run at another State Title next year.
